What Is Japan Cosplay?

Japanese Cosplay or ‘Costume Roleplay’ became popular worldwide, but Cosplay Outfits actually originated in Japan.

Cosplay Japan is an entire subculture of Tokyo teens who dress up as characters from manga, anime (Japanese comics) books, graphic novels, video games and fantasy movies.

Where Can I See Cosplay Girls Wearing Harajuku Fashion?

  • Japanese cosplay fans gather with their friends in places like Tokyo's Harajuku district to dress in Cosplay outfits.
This happens every Sunday on Jingu Bridge (a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to Meiji Jingu shrine).

  • Tokyo's Akihabara district has a large number of Tokyo Cosplay / Harajuku style clothing cafés.
The waitresses at the Maid cafe dress as Manga or Anime characters. Some of these Akihabara Maid cafe's are so popular you see lines forming outside the door.

    Harajuku Style Childish?
Kanye West And Gwen Stefani Don't Think So

Some criticize Japanese Cosplay and Harajuku clothes and claim that the followers are childish, and need to get themselves a life.
    I disagree.

I bet anyone who has criticized Japan Cosplay has dressed up in their favorite sports team uniform and stood up with thousands of other people dressed exactly in the same ridiculous outfit.

Japanese Cosplay can be seen as an art form. It certainly shows a unique sense of style and design.
Designers and celebrities are watching Eccentric Tokyo street fashion closely for new trends. Kanye West mentioned Harajuku fashion in his interviews.
Gwen Stefani mentioned Harajuku style and Harajuku girl in her songs and Albums (Stefani even has a Gwen Harajuku girl clothing line and perfumes.
Tokyo teens fashion is setting the style for world fashion.

The work that goes into Cosplay outfits is incredible. Some of them take years to complete and are a never ending project.
A Harajuku Girl will know how to embroider, process leather, and create teddy bears from PVC.
It's a hobby, like any other hobby.

Of course after putting in so much time and effort it's fun to show off what you have created. That's the reason that Cosplay followers gather every Sunday in Harajuku.

Harajuku style is not limited to Girls only. There is a Harajuku boys style too.
