What Is Cosplay?

Cosplay Girls are a Japanese sub-culture that sees dressing up as a hobby.


Japan Cosplay permits Tokyo Teens to explore different identities by dressing up in extraordinary costumes.


Cosplay Costumes are often based on popular Anime (Japanese comics) characters.


Best Cosplay outfits are usually handmade, sometimes through months of elaborate work.


Every Cosplay costume is a unique outfit. The Japanese cosplay fans make complicated handmade designs through working with lace, leather, PVC and combining ready made items and their own creations.


Japanese Cosplay does not center on sexuality.
On the contrary – some of these Girls create outfits that are resemble Victorian Dolls, or Hello Kitty. But the tight outfits and element of fantasy have made Tokyo Cosplay a significant part of modern Japanese sexuality.


Japanese Cosplay followers treat their hobby very seriously. They spend a fortune on their outfits, frequently visiting a Tokyo Cosplay store and Cosplay shop to buy Cosplay accessories to their outfit (plastic guns…)

Where Can You See Japan Cosplay?

Cosplay fans gather to see each others' costumes and show off their own.
This happens every Sunday on on Jingu Bridge (a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to Meiji Jingu shrine).
You can also see some of the Best Cosplay outfits in Tokyo's Akihabara district.
These Cosplay followers love to be photographed.
It's what they've worked for – recognition and respect for their Cosplay costumes.


Some of them participate at the Cosplay convention which is held every year.


Akihabara has many Cosplay cafés for devoted Cosplay fans. The waitresses in these cafés dress in Cosplay costumes as game or Anime characters. These cafe's are also known as Maid cafe.
