Kabuki Theatre Show
For a taste of traditional Tokyo nightlife, explore
Ginza
district. You can spend the evening in a
kabuki theatre show.
Kabuki theater is a traditional Japan Entertainment and form of art which started in the Edo period. Kabuki plays are usually about moral conflicts in love relationships. During Ancient Japanese culture both men and women acted in Kabuki plays. Later women were forbidden to act in Kabuki Theatre - a restriction that still goes on today. Male kabuki actors play the roles of females. The best place to see a Kabuki Theatre Show is in the Kabukiza Theater in Ginza. It is possible to rent English headphones and see just one act of a play, instead of sitting through a whole performance which lasts more than three hours.

Pachinko
Pachinko machines are uniquely Japanese. You can find them in pachinko parlors. These parlors are usually kitsch decorated places, with flashing lights and a constant noise from the metal balls, music and announcements.
It is a very strange game to a western eye since the player is completely passive while playing pachinko.
Most of the balls fall down the machine and disappear, but a few find their way into special holes. This activates a kind of a slot machine, and the player wins if the same three pictures appear.
The players win balls which they swap for prizes in the parlor's gift shop (teddy bears and the likes....). Gambling in Japan is illegal, but I hear you can exchange the teddy bears for cash just outside the parlor

Hot Springs are a very popular form of entertainment in Japan. Japan Onsen waters are pumped from deep springs, and are at least 25°C. The water contains natural minerals which are believed to have many health benefits. Men and women bath separately. There are several real Onsen in Tokyo. The most popular ones are
- Oedo Onsen Monogatari -
Address 2-57 Aomi, Koto-ku, Tokyo 135-0064 Phone 03-5500-1126 It's more of a water park with natural spring water, and an impressive dιcor duplicating the Edo period.
- Zaboo -
Address Close to the heart of Roppongi Phone 03-5770-8100 Opening hours 10:30 am to 9 am Public transportation to Roppongi Station This is a nice (and expensive) place to enjoy a natural onsen. Many small inside and outside baths. Several sauna and relaxation rooms are also available.

Don't confuse Onsen with the many Sento in Tokyo. The Sento are traditional public bathhouses. Most of them use normal tap water. Unlike western cultures, the Japanese go into the bath after they have washed and rinsed, and feel like relaxing in hot water. It can be very calming. If you have the time - I recommend it since it's a very fundamental part of Japanese culture.
