The Earthquake in Japan: How You Can Help

Traveling to Japan is the Best way right now to support Japan’s recovery from March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

On December 16, 2011 Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said that Japan has finally brought leaking reactors at Fukushima under control.
This is a vital step on the long road to recovery, nine months after its nuclear crisis began.

Tourism to Japan fell by 60% over 2011 because of the Tsunami and earthquake disasters.
Tourism numbers improved in June and July with 30% below 2010 levels.

The loss of tourism income is a huge pressure on Japan's struggling economy.

You can Help by spending your vacation in Japan.

If you have any questions about the current situation in Tokyo, or are wondering how to donate to Japan and support Japan- please use this form to ask your questions.

Japan Earthquake Tsunami Risks

Since the 1923 earthquake Japan has become a world leader in research and information on causes and prediction of earthquakes.
Japan’s advanced research and technology has enabled the building of skyscrapers in Tokyo.

Being in a skyscraper during a Japan Earthquake is not as dangerous as you may think.
None of the buildings collapsed.
Same goes for all bridges and roads.

None of the Major Attractions in Tokyo has been damaged (except for the tip of the iconic Tokyo Tower which has been bent by the Earthquake-see the photo bellow).

Japan Earthquake

The large number of victims in this Earthquake occurred in the north of Japan.
Tsunami waves wiped out everything in their way.

The Japanese are prepared for Earthquakes more than any other nation in the world.
Frequent training is held at schools and working places.
Every Japanese kid knows exactly what to do in case of an earthquake.
Japan is also prepared for a Tsunami. Japan has concrete walls and dams along its shores, but the 10 meter waves of the 2011 Tsunami in Japan washed these walls away.

Earthquakes In Japan & The Japanese Mentality

The widespread reaction in Japan to nature disasters is acceptance and a quick shift to reconstruction.

Unlike western society, the Japanese people do not look for someone to blame. They are not irritated at the authorities or at their gods, and they Do Not consider the disaster a punishment for their sins.

Their attitude is pragmatic; remove the wrecks, re-build, and forget what has happened.

The repeated training and the Japanese mentality of self-control have contributed to the fact that there is no panic in the present Japan earthquake-Tsunami situation.

This was also the Japanese reaction after World War II.
As a reaction to the Japanese attack on the US naval base in Pearl Harbor (1941) the United States wiped out Hiroshima and Nagasaki with two atomic bombs. The bombs killed 130,000 people.
Heavy bombings during that time destroyed many major attractions in Tokyo, much of them were burned to the ground.
The city's population after bombings in 1945 was only half that of 1940.
