How Can You Celebrate The Festival Just Like The Japanese?

It's very common to share a picnic with some friends and family under a glorious Japanese Cherry Blossom tree.

As a tourist, you'll find these huge picnics a very happy event.

You'll probably wonder why the Japanese got such a name for being reserved and formal.

Well…the truth is - Japanese people see Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival as an opportunity to wind down, socialize and drink.

There are lots of unique Traditional Japanese foods for Japan Cherry Blossom festival, and a lot of Sake and excellent Japanese beer involved.

By evening time most of the participants will find it hard to recognize a cherry blossom branch from a traffic sign.

Some places are so popular, you have to reserve a picnic spot for the Cherry Blossom celebrations long before the party is held.

Locals spread a picnic sheet early in the morning and mark it with their name and starting time.

Some companies even send someone to keep an eye on the spot the whole day (like in the picture on your right) until the rest of the group arrives after work!

9 Tokyo Places Only The Locals Know For Japan Cherry Blossom

Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) is a very popular custom.

During festival days, everyone goes out, strolling along the Sumida River or sharing a picnic in the park.

Here are the Tokyo places where all the fun goes on -

  1. Top picks - The Japanese style Gardens in Tokyo
    Hama-Rikyu Garden - Tukiji Shijo Station.
    Rikugien Garden - Komagome Station

  2. Chidorigafuchi Koen. The sight of the moats of this Edo Castle covered in pink flowers is breath taking.
    Rowing boats are available for rent and the Cherry Blossom Trees are lit up in the evenings.
    Get off at Hanzomon or Kudanshita Station.

  3. Yasukuni Jinja Shrine where another thousand Cherry Blossom trees were planted.
  4. The Imperial Palace Tokyo East Gardens.They're especially beautiful during cherry blossom season (and also during plum blossom - March and April).
  5. Sumida River Park -The Park stretches for a few hundred meters along both sides of the Sumida River.
    Start from Asakusa Tokyo subway Station.
    There are food stalls with the popular Dango - a chewy snack made from rice flour, part of the traditional food eaten during Hanami.
    You can also rent a boat and enjoy the sight of the Cherry blossom trees from the River.
  6. Koishikawa Botanical Gardens. That's a large park with many Japanese cherry blossom trees and a Japanese style garden.
    There is a small admission fee here.
    Get off at Hakusan or Myogadani subway Station.
  7. Inokashira Park - a public city park with a pond. There's an added bonus here – you can rent a Boat and sail in the peaceful, poetic scenery.There is no admission fee here.
    Get off at Kichijoji subway Station.
  8. The road leading to Aoyama Cemetery is lined by hundreds of Japanese cherry blossom trees.
    It's at the Nagasaki or Gaienmae subway Station.
  9. Shinjuku Gyoen - Western and Japanese style gardens with more than one thousand cherry trees of over a dozen species.
    It's a 5-10 minute walk from Shinjuku Station.
    There is a small admission fee.
  10. Ueno Park - more than 1000 trees along the street leading towards the National Museum and around the Pond.
    This is by far one of Tokyo's most crowded, noisy and popular cherry blossom spots (A few steps from Ueno Station).
