Tokyo hotels often raise their rates during a Japanese holiday or festival.

The weekends before and after major Japanese festivals and Japanese Holidays are also likely to be crowded on trains and airports.

On the other hand, a vacation at this time can be a pleasure, since many people leave the city and it becomes less crowded.

The 3 Major Tokyo Holidays

  • Japanese New Year - December 27 to January 4, plus weekends before and after. Note that some museums, shops and restaurants close for the holiday. The whole country is celebrating for several days.

  • 'Golden Week' - (April 29th to May 5th). During this week there are three Tokyo holidays. Many Japanese take the entire Golden Week off from work to celebrate these events.

  • Families usually travel during school vacations, which are from the end of March through to the beginning of April and from July 20 to the end of August.

Tokyo places tends to be less crowded at these times since many people go back to their home towns.

Tokyo hotels Booking is not so tight during school holidays as during the Tokyo holidays, but I recommend you make reservations in advance.
