Modern, authentic Japanese swords are made by a few hundred Artisans.

Many examples can be seen at contests hosted by the All- Japan Sword smiths Association.

The NBTHK does significant work, which includes running the Japanese Swords Museum in Tokyo and organizing annual competitions.

It also promotes communication between the Artisans producing the authentic Japanese swords.

After World War II an entire generation of skillful artisans was lost. In earlier times schools of sword smiths guarded their manufacturing secrets.

The annual contest that is organized by the NBTHK covers many aspects of making Japanese swords.

How Do You Recognize Authentic Japanese Swords?

As a part of marketing there is a lot of disinformation on antique pieces. Modern ones are presented as ancient Japanese Samurai swords.

The first question should be – do you want ancient swords or a modern replica?

Japanese swords make an outstanding piece of Antique on the wall, or an inspiring hobby and collectible.

The only problem is that they are very expensive. Authentic ones can cost between a few hundred dollars to a six figures price.

A substitute is buying cheap samurai swords which are still very attractive and impressing, but cost much – much less.

Modern ones are made in the same standards as the Antique Samurai Sword.

They are a good alternative for the new collector, and for anyone who wants a decorative piece that is impressing and looks real.

Many Chinese military weapons are confused with Japanese.

A Ninja Samurai sword is a Hollywood fiction. There is no historical documentation that ninja used especially designed swords.

New collectors believe that if the piece is signed, it’s proof that it is handmade and antique.

Artisans during WW II created many machine made swords. Those were signed as a way of giving more prestige to the sword.

On the other hand - if a sword is not signed it does not mean it's machine made.

Many antique blades were left unsigned or their signatures have been erased over time. Whether a blade is signed or not has little to do with its authenticity and value.

It should be noted that some companies and independent smiths outside of Japan are making swords too, with varying levels of quality.
