The Michelin guide claims that "Tokyo is the top gastronomic city in the world".

The Michelin restaurant guide for Tokyo restaurants was first released in Nov 2007.

Not many people don't know this, but Tokyo is one of the most amazing cities in the world in terms of restaurants. The city is building a reputation as the ‘dining capital of the world'.

The Michelin restaurant listings for Tokyo awards more stars to the city's restaurants than New York and Paris together.

This city has more restaurants than almost any other city in the world.
Paris has around 20,000, New York about 23,000, and Tokyo at least 160,000.
"Tokyo is the top gastronomic city in the world”, said Bernard Delmas, President of Michelin.

And here is a link to an update Nov 09' Michelin Tokyo Guide with a list of Best Tokyo Restaurants.

The Michelin guide for Tokyo includes helpful classifications - by star, cuisine, neighborhood, plus great Tokyo maps to get there.

It is now the second year that Michelin is reviewing Tokyo restaurants. The second guide was published in November 2008.

The Michelin guide for Tokyo did stir some confusion.
Despite Michelin's reputation as best guide, many locals were confused as to how these stars were awarded.

Rumors indicated that some unworthy restaurants received Michelin stars, while some of the best restaurants in Tokyo received none.

Some restaurants refused to accept the stars that Michelin was willing to award them, claiming that they did not want their name stained by a foreign authority that knew nothing of Traditional Japanese foods.

Another disapproval was that Japan has a wide variety of local kitchens (regional kitchens) and rather than recommending non-Asian kitchens in Tokyo (French, Italian) the Michelin Restaurant Guide should have presented more of the local variety.

Despite criticism, if you want to eat well in Japan and don't have much knowledge about where to go, this guide provides very useful restaurant recommendations.
