Sakura (Cherry Blossom in Japan) also marks the beginning of the new academic year (Japanese school year starts in April) and the new financial year for business.

Some places are so popular, you have to spread a picnic sheet early in the morning and mark it with your name and starting time.


Some companies send somebody stand there the whole day (like in the picture on your right) until the rest of the group arrives after work!!


Hanami, the cherry blossom flower viewing, includes some great traditional activities. It's an important social event for Japanese people, an opportunity to celebrate, wind down, and generally fool around a bit.


Friends and family celebrate Japan Cherry Blossom Festival with food, beer, and hot sake (rice wine).


A very popular food eaten during Hanami is called Dango. It's a chewy snack made of rice flour.



Cherry Blossom Festival Japan - The Top 6 Tokyo Places

  • The Imperial Palace East Gardens are especially beautiful during cherry blossom season (and also during plum blossom - March and April). This area is very popular for Hanami - the cherry blossom flower viewing.

  • Sumida Park -The Park stretches for a few hundred meters along both sides of Sumida River. Start from Asakusa Tokyo subway Station.

  • Koishikawa Botanical Garden -a large park with many Japanese cherry blossom trees and a Japanese garden. The admission fee is 330 Yen. (Hakusan or Myogadani subway Station).

  • Inokashira Park -a public city park with a pond. There is no admission fee. Boats can be rented. (Kichijoji subway Station).

  • Aoyama Cemetery -The straight road leading through the cemetery is lined by hundreds of Japanese cherry blossom trees. There is no admission fee. (Nagasaki or Gaienmae subway Station).

  • Ueno Park - more than 1000 trees along the street leading towards the National Museum and around the Pond. One of Tokyo's most crowded, noisy and popular cherry blossom spots (A few steps from Ueno Station).
