Japan Culture - Japanese Women and Umbrellas in Tokyo

When I was in Tokyo two years ago (had an amazing time!) I noticed that many Japanese women were carrying open umbrellas when there was no sun or rain, even late in the evening.
Maybe you know why?

Reply To Japanese Women and Umbrellas in Tokyo

Hi Alina,
You're so right... Japanese women carry an umbrella rain or shine.
This I believe is due to the huge importance of a fair/bright skin complexion in the Japanese culture. It is considered a very crucial part of femininity.
You might have noticed that all Japanese people look much younger than their age group in western countries.
I believe staying away from the sun is part of it. The rest lies in the Japanese Diet which is now gaining popularity world wide. The Japanese women believe that eating fish (skin included) is responsible for beautiful complexion. Since Japanese fish consumption is 2-3 times a day, that can explain their beautiful skin tone.

On the other hand - you might have seen members of the Japanese Cosplay Tokyo pop culture, which dress like Gothic Lolitas, French Maids and Hello Kitty.

These Harajuku Girls accessorize their creative and charming Harajuku Fashion with original and inspiring Cosplay outfits - umbrellas included.

Thanks for sharing!
