Safe To Visit Tokyo Early September?

by Nathan
(Australia)

I am planning on traveling at the beginning of September to the Tokyo region and Nagano.
I am assuming radiation levels will have dropped by then but where can we find out what they are? Individual embassies? DFAT here in Australia? Or is there a webpage that is updated daily / weekly??

Thanks heaps in advance..

Reply To: Safety Of A Tokyo Vacation In September (Updated May 10th 2011)

Nathan, I'd like to start with distances of Nagano from the Fukushima plant- 147 miles / 236.57 km, and the distance between Tokyo and Fukushima-148 miles/290 km.
This is just to give you some proportions.
Now to the current situation-I can tell first hand that life in Tokyo has fully gone back to normal, same in Nagano.
On top of that-British and Canadian governments and the US Department of State have canceled all travel restrictions to Japan from April 14, except for the areas that have been directly affected by the Japan earthquake/tsunami. There is actually a very good reason not to travel to these areas as it would consume resources needed for relief workers and residents.
Continuous monitoring confirm that radiation levels are well within safe limits from a health perspective.
There is no more screening for radiation of passengers arriving from Japan at airports or seaports around the world.
The UN agencies involved in the monitoring process are the World Health Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Meteorological Organization, the International Maritime Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the World Tourism Organization.
You can find updates on the website of the World Health Organization -

Hope this helps!
