Traveling to Japan can be a very long and tiring trip for a healthy person, so planning ahead will prevent it from being overwhelming for the disabled traveler and care taker.
Here are some steps to help you to get the most amazing vacation.
Medical Documents. Bring along medical documents and medical insurance of the disabled person in English and in Japanese. This will be useful in case you need medical treatment in Japan.
Tokyo Subway and Japan Trains. Tokyo is among the cities that offers Wheelchair accessibility in most of its stations. Most stations have lifts or escalators that have a mechanism allowing four steps to be leveled to support a wheelchair.
If a section of the subway/train station doesn’t have an elevator or escalators, ask for the help of the employees to get to the platform. They will carry you over the stairs in your wheelchair.
To get on and off a train ask the train staff and they will quickly prepare a ramp for a wheelchair. They also inform the approaching train that a wheelchair is to be loaded and the train will stop for as long as needed for you to get on. Your end station will be informed too and employees will be waiting for you with a ramp at the exit of the exact car that you are on.
There are special seats inside buses and subway trains reserved for the disabled.
Bus drivers and Taxi drivers are trained to help you get on and off their vehicle too.
